It rapresents vividly the struggle with the places of the city center on the background. The two factions fighting were the Gonzagas and the Bonacolsis.
The sudden attack took place on a sultry August night.
Rinaldo callled Passerino was waken up by the cries and the armies'noise; he went out from the Captain's Palace and turned towarda Piazza delle Erbe where the battle was reaging. He was wounded by the sword of one of the plotters and while trying to escape into his palace, he hit his head against the corner of the doo-way and fell to the ground where he died.
When the battle had finished, Luigi Gonzaga come into Mantova and went to the Cathedral to express his thanks with the traditional Te Deum.
