The fight against crime speeds up with ultra-broadband: the four city operations centers and the capital’s video surveillance system are now connected MANTUA – A more stable, faster, and more resilient connection also for the Mantua Police Headquarters: this is the latest goal achieved by Mynet, which has recently completed the extension of the fiber optic infrastructure now linking the city’s operational centers. The project mirrors the one signed between the Metropolitan City of Milan and the Milan Police Headquarters, but surpasses it in applied technologies and implementation times, becoming the first of its kind at a regional level. The Mantua-based telecommunications operator, a leader throughout northern Italy, has thus “signed” the network dedicated to the State Police Offices, including the Headquarters in Piazza Sordello, the “Solferino” Barracks, the Prefecture’s Guard Corps, and the Police Post at the “C. Poma” Hospital. They can now browse the web and transmit data via true FTTH (Fiber To The Home) optical fiber at the super speed of 10 Gbit/s symmetric (both download and upload). The infrastructure, dedicated exclusively to the Mantua Police Headquarters, will allow the transmission of images, documents, and large amounts of data, facilitating interconnection between local offices and the use of advanced communication tools. It will also promote broader online collaboration and speed up services for citizens. The project, designed by Mynet to minimize road and sidewalk disruption and thus inconvenience for citizens, was carried out using innovative low-impact excavation techniques. Where possible, the works employed the “no-dig” method, a set of systems that enable underground pipe and infrastructure installation using robotic machinery, thus avoiding open trenching. The network construction, which began in July last year and was completed in January, includes a fiber optic backbone stretching approximately 14 km, connecting—through a closed ring path—the four State Police offices in the city. Around ten kilometers use existing company-owned infrastructure, while the remaining four were newly built by Mynet’s teams. The first connections were activated in February. The project marks a turning point especially for the Prefecture’s Guard Corps and the Police Post at “Poma,” which until now were not directly connected to the Headquarters’ IT systems. Now, the two offices can easily communicate online with the Piazza Sordello office and send documentation electronically. The entire data transmission and communications network between the various Police Headquarters offices is also connected, along with the video surveillance system linked to the Operations Center in Piazza Sordello, consisting of about 350 cameras for crime prevention and law enforcement monitoring throughout the city. As the Mayor of Mantua, Mattia Palazzi, stated: “More than ever, fiber optics are essential for city security services. Mantua represents a model thanks to the cooperation among institutions.” The Police Chief, Paolo Sartori, added: “The use of advanced data transmission systems for communication and video surveillance is a fundamental added value for ensuring public safety.”
