SEM AND MYNET BRING TRUE FIBER TO MORBEGNO

MORBEGNO (SONDRIO) – The electricity and district heating networks join the world of telecommunications: this is the result of the important agreement signed in recent hours between SEM – Società Elettrica in Morbegno and Mynet, a national telecommunications operator and leader throughout northern Italy. The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at facilitating the introduction of Mynet’s fiber optic network in all buildings (public and private, including apartment complexes and industrial sites) already reached and served by SEM’s electricity and district heating networks.

SEM is the sole distributor for the territories of Morbegno, Cosio Valtellino, Bema and Rasura, and currently supplies electricity to about 13,000 users for a total of around 64 million kWh per year. As for district heating, SEM’s infrastructure extends for over 35 km and supplies the residential and industrial areas of Morbegno and Talamona with a connected load of over 75,000 kW.

The signed agreement will allow Mynet to use SEM’s electricity and district heating networks to bring the “glass” cable into the already existing and highly developed underground infrastructure: in this way, fiber optics will be able to reach citizens, businesses and institutional offices in a widespread and capillary manner, entering homes and offices directly, building by building, with truly minimal costs for users.

The cabling plan foresees a five-year investment that will make it possible to develop a true FTTH (Fiber To The Home) fiber optic ring backbone covering the entire municipal area and, subsequently, all user connections for over 2,000 housing units using both GPON technology (for private customers) and AON (for small and large companies). The impact of the works on the territory will be limited thanks to the use of SEM’s existing underground infrastructures. The project will also serve to connect municipal buildings, schools, offices and public administration headquarters. In recent days, Mynet teams have been carrying out the first inspections; work is scheduled to begin between late January and early February.

“Since we began investing in the province of Sondrio, building an entirely fiber optic network for private users has always been my dream,” comments Mynet’s General Director, Giovanni Zorzoni. “We have found in SEM a special partner who, just like us, builds networks out of passion and dedication: this is the best starting point for the success of the project.”

The president of the Società Elettrica di Morbegno, Pietro Bertolini, states: “This agreement celebrates what we have accomplished throughout our history and demonstrates how two private companies can work effectively side by side for a greater purpose — the common good. A project that therefore takes on a high social value, as well as technological.”

To seal the agreement between SEM and Mynet, the municipal administration of Morbegno, represented by Mayor Alberto Gavazzi, supported by the Councillor for Public Works Franco Marchini and the head of the technical office Andrea Bosatta, took part. The Municipality, which has agreed to the installation of the first street cabinets, will also be connected to the fiber network. “Ultrabroadband will allow the Municipality and citizens to be hyperconnected, using the best infrastructures and technologies available,” says Gavazzi. “Fiber is a service that Morbegno could no longer do without: we are proud to finally make it available to the entire community.”
