MANTUA IS THE FIRST CITY IN THE WORLD TO HAVE THE HYPERFAST 50G PON TECHNOLOGY
Mynet is Italy’s capital of speed.

After achieving the European record as the first operator to publicly test 50G PON technology on a real network—with a live demonstration on December 22, 2022, at the University of Mantua in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Engineering and the Municipality of Mantua—Mynet now sets another record: the first commercial launch of this cutting-edge technology in Italy, making it available throughout the Mantua area.

The 50G PON represents the global state of the art in ultra-fast connectivity, in its first production-ready trimodal version, capable of simultaneously supporting existing 2.5G and 10G technologies.

Unprecedented performance: up to 25 Gbps symmetric

Thanks to 50G PON, Mynet offers connections of up to 25 Gbps for both download and upload—that’s 20 times faster than today’s most common technology. It marks a digital revolution that opens new technological frontiers, dramatically accelerating data transmission times.

To put it into perspective, it’s like moving from a traditional railway to high-speed rail: using the same fiber-optic infrastructure, data transfer speeds are tripled, closing digital gaps just as high-speed trains shortened the physical distance between cities like Milan, Florence, Rome, and Naples. Sending and receiving large files—such as entire digital libraries or ultra-high-resolution videos—becomes instantaneous, drastically reducing waiting times and optimizing workflows for businesses and professionals.

From lab to reality: 50G PON is now available for businesses

With this step, Mynet brings future technology out of the lab, making it available to micro-enterprises with extreme bandwidth needs and ultra-low latency requirements. The service is now active across the entire city of Mantua and will soon be available in Milan’s City Life and Portello districts.

Mynet’s goal is clear: to progressively extend 50G PON across its entire proprietary network—an infrastructure of over 32,000 km of optical fiber spanning Lombardy, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Emilia-Romagna.

The future of ultra-performance connectivity is already here. And Mynet is leading the way.

“After the success of our trials, we decided to push the boundaries of connectivity by being the first in the world to launch this technology,” said Giovanni Zorzoni, General Manager of Mynet. “With 50G PON, Italian micro-enterprises can embrace the cloud—or even build their own—allowing anyone to connect to their company’s resources without the slightest slowdown, using the best connectivity available on the global market.”

Focus on micro-enterprises: a strategic choice

In its initial phase, the new technology will be reserved for micro-enterprises—companies with a maximum of 10 employees and €2 million in annual turnover—as a deliberate strategic decision.

“This is a large market segment, often overlooked by major operators yet crucial to Italy’s economy,” continues Zorzoni. “Contrary to the stereotype that paints them as resistant to change, many micro-enterprises are investing in digital transformation, leveraging the cloud and seeking high-performance data management solutions.

With 50G PON, Mynet offers them unprecedented connectivity, optimized for traffic to national and international cloud providers, and enabling applications once promised—but never realized—by 5G. Major mobile operators missed the mark with millimeter-wave 5G, which would have required significant investments that never materialized.

Moreover, as with every new technology launch, the availability of equipment and resources is initially limited. At Mynet, staying true to our grassroots entrepreneurial roots, we chose to start with micro-enterprises—offering them 50G PON under especially favorable conditions—to reward those betting on digital transformation.”

50G PON: a technological revolution without infrastructure changes

Mynet brings 50G PON into the real world, ensuring next-generation connectivity without the need for major work on existing fiber-optic infrastructures—requiring only technological upgrades at signal transmission points.

“This technology opens new horizons for businesses, public institutions, and network operators, offering ultra-high-performance connectivity without demanding new infrastructure investments,” adds Zorzoni. “For organizations that manage massive data volumes, rely on large-scale cloud computing, and require real-time enterprise backups, 50G PON represents a turning point. But for us, it’s more than that: it’s not only about being world pioneers but also about proving that a mid-sized company can make a difference by delivering superior-quality networks that redefine standards of speed and reliability.”

“On behalf of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, I would like to express my appreciation for Mynet’s achievement in the commercial launch of the 50G PON technology, demonstrated for the first time globally right here,” said Dario Stabili, Professor of Cybersecurity at UniMore. “This is a significant step in Mantua’s commitment to digital innovation, and as a lecturer in Computer Engineering at UniMore’s local program, I welcome this evolution in the local technological landscape, hoping it will foster new opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry.”

“As Fondazione UniverMantova, we are pleased to host Mynet in our Aula Magna, where for several years now students have been graduating from one of the most innovative computer engineering programs in Italy,” said Luisa Lavagnini, General Coordinator of Fondazione UniverMantova. “Strongly focused on innovation in cybersecurity and autonomous robotics, the UniMore program is highly attractive, as shown by the sharp rise in enrollments. Moreover,” concluded Lavagnini, “Mynet is an important partner for the foundation, thanks also to its commitment to supporting university students.”

“The Municipality of Mantua,” added Adriana Nepote, Councilor for University and Research, Innovation and Smart City, “is proud to celebrate a historic milestone for our city. With Mynet’s launch of 50G PON, Mantua becomes the first city in the world to have ultra-fast connectivity of this magnitude—a result that positions us at the forefront of global technology. Mynet is a center of excellence in our region and a key partner that has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation and technological development. Our collaboration with Mynet, ongoing since 2022, has enabled ambitious projects and initiatives with a significant impact on our community. We are extremely pleased with this achievement, which allows us to play a leading role in the digital revolution. The ultra-fast connectivity offered by 50G PON will not only improve our citizens’ quality of life but will also provide essential support to local businesses—especially micro-enterprises—that will benefit from unprecedented connectivity. This project is a prime example of how public-private collaboration can produce extraordinary results and drive the economic and technological growth of our region.”
